Ledger Live: Secure Crypto Asset Management From Install to First Transfer

Ledger Live: First Setup for New Hardware Wallet Users

Ledger Live: Secure Crypto Asset Management From Install to First Transfer

If you are new to Ledger Live, this setup guide shows what the app does, how to get it from the right place, and how to prepare your Ledger device for first use. Ledger Live is the free companion app for Ledger hardware wallets: you install coin apps onto the device, receive and send crypto, and track your portfolio, while the private keys stay on your device. Ledger Live will never ask you to enter your 24-word recovery phrase. This independent guide is not affiliated with Ledger.

What Ledger Live Is and How It Operates

Ledger Live is a desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux) and mobile (iOS, Android) interface that shows balances and builds transactions. Private keys are generated and stored on the Secure Element of your Ledger device and never reach your computer or phone.

The Split Between Screen and Device

Ledger Live never holds your keys; the device does. Because of this split, a compromised computer can change what the monitor shows but cannot approve a transaction that you have not confirmed on the device. The device display, not the monitor, is the reference point whenever you confirm a destination address.

How a Transfer Is Prepared, Signed and Sent

The app prepares the transaction, your device shows the amount and the destination on its own screen, and the transaction is only sent after you confirm physically on the device. Every outgoing transaction must be checked and approved on the device. If something looks wrong, reject it on the device.

Which Connection Methods Each Platform Uses

The desktop app connects to your device by USB. Bluetooth is used only between a Nano X (and, where Ledger supports it, newer devices) and the mobile app. The Nano S Plus has no Bluetooth, so use a USB cable with it. The original Nano S is discontinued, though existing devices still work.

Who Needs Ledger Live and When a Device Alone Is Not Enough

Almost anyone who intends to receive, send or manage crypto needs Ledger Live, because the device itself does not show a portfolio or install coin apps on its own. It is the interface for all of that.

Long-Term Storage With Little Movement

If you only plan to store assets and rarely move them, you will use the app less often. Even so, installing coin apps, updating firmware and checking receive addresses all happen through Ledger Live, so most owners install it at the start.

Several Coins in One Place

Ledger Live earns its place once you hold more than one coin. Balances appear together in the Portfolio, and you add an account for each coin. Consolidation saves effort, but remember that the device remains the only place where transactions are approved.

Households Sharing One Computer

If several people use one computer, each person uses their own Ledger device and PIN. Balances may be visible to anyone who opens the app, but nothing can be sent without the right device and its PIN. The optional password lock in Ledger Live limits who can open the app on that computer.

Ways to Install Ledger Live and Their Trade-offs

Ledger Live is available as a desktop app from ledger.com and as a mobile app from the Apple App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android). There is no web version, and there is no separate bridge product or USB driver to install.

Installation routes compared by purpose and source
Route Suited to Where it comes from
Desktop app (Windows, macOS, Linux) Full account management and firmware updates at a desk ledger.com
Mobile app (iOS) Checking and approving away from a desk Apple App Store
Mobile app (Android) Checking and approving away from a desk Google Play; an APK only from ledger.com
Any other website, mirror or app Nothing; avoid Not official: treat as phishing

Choose the desktop app when you want to work at a computer and update your device. Choose the mobile app when you want to manage your crypto from your phone. You can use the same Ledger device with both. The macOS version is not in the Mac App Store.

Why Firmware Updates Go Through Ledger Live

Firmware is not downloaded as a separate file. Device firmware updates are installed through Ledger Live (My Ledger) by following the prompts on the screen and on the device. Do not disconnect the device during the update.

Store Listings and the Official Website

Both the official website and the official app stores are legitimate sources. Check the publisher name on any store listing. Fake apps and fake download pages are a known phishing method, so never use a link from an advert, message or search result you do not trust.

Where Access Is Lost and What the Software Cannot Do

Access is usually lost in one of three ways: a recovery phrase written down wrongly, a recovery phrase photographed or stored online, or a recovery phrase handed to a scammer. No support channel can recover a lost phrase for you.

Backups Kept on Connected Devices

Any digital copy of the phrase is a risk. Screenshots, password managers, cloud notes and email drafts all place the phrase near the accounts it protects. Paper or metal kept offline removes that exposure but needs a safe place. Anyone who reads the phrase gets immediate, irreversible control of your funds. Ledger Recover is an optional paid subscription service for backing up the phrase; details are on ledger.com.

Out-of-Date Software or Firmware

If Ledger Live and your device are not up to date, the device may not be detected or some features may be missing. This can look like a faulty cable. Update Ledger Live and the firmware through the app, and check that the cable and port work.

There Is No Backup File

There is no wallet data backup file that protects your funds. Your backup is the 24-word recovery phrase written down offline. Restoring a wallet happens on the device itself, never inside Ledger Live or on a website.

Safe Steps for Your First Setup

Installing Ledger Live from the official source and setting up your device are two separate jobs. Do them in order, and stop if anything asks for your recovery phrase outside the device.

Step 1: Download from the official source

Type ledger.com yourself, or open the Apple App Store or Google Play. Avoid sponsored results that imitate the real download page.

Step 2: Check the publisher

Confirm that the source is ledger.com or the official store listing. If an installer came from anywhere else, delete it and download again from the official source. Do not bypass any warning.

Step 3: Set up the device and write down the phrase

Follow the prompts on your Ledger device to choose a PIN. The device shows your 24-word recovery phrase; write the words on paper or metal in the exact order and keep them offline.

Step 4: Install the coin apps and add accounts

Open Ledger Live, connect and unlock your device, install the coin app you need (for example Bitcoin or Ethereum) through My Ledger, then use Add account in Accounts and follow the prompts.

Step 5: Check the address on the device

To receive crypto, open the account, choose Receive and check that the address on your device matches the one in Ledger Live before you use it. If you want extra caution, send a small amount first.

What Changes Between Releases and What Stays Predictable

Coin support, menu wording and where features sit can change between Ledger Live releases. The way keys are protected does not change: they stay on the device, and you confirm transactions on it.

Coins Added and Removed

The list of supported coins changes over time. If a coin or screen from an older tutorial is missing, check the current information on ledger.com. A change in what the app displays does not mean the device has lost control of your keys.

Paid Recovery Offers and Claims

Be careful with services that promise to recover your wallet. The manufacturer does not hold a copy of your recovery phrase, and a service that asks you to type the phrase is a scam. The only optional service is Ledger Recover; see ledger.com for details.

Outcomes That Cannot Be Undone

A confirmed transaction is final. Sending to an address on the wrong network, or to an address replaced by malware, can lose funds for good. That is why you compare the address on the device screen each time.

Frequently Asked Questions

I downloaded Ledger Live from a search result. How can I tell it is the official app before I connect my Nano?

Use ledger.com and follow its links to the desktop installer or the App Store or Google Play listing. Check the address bar before you download, and avoid ads or search results that lead to other domains. After installation, open Ledger Live and connect your device. Ledger Live will not ask for your 24-word recovery phrase; if any screen or person does, stop.

My new Nano X is charged and on, but Ledger Live does not detect it over Bluetooth. What should I check?

Check that Bluetooth is on for your phone and allowed for Ledger Live in system settings, and unlock the Nano X with your PIN. Close other apps that may hold the Bluetooth connection. In Ledger Live, remove the old pairing and pair again. If that fails, update Ledger Live and try a USB connection. The Nano S Plus has no Bluetooth, so use a USB cable with it. Do not reset the device unless you have your recovery phrase backed up.

During first setup, the Nano shows a recovery phrase. Should I take a photo of it?

No. A photo can sync to cloud services, get copied by other apps, or be seen by someone who picks up your phone. Write the words on paper or use a metal backup, keep it offline, and check each word on the device screen during setup. Never type the phrase into Ledger Live, a website, a chat, or a password manager. Ledger Live does not need the phrase to show your accounts.

Do I need to add a Bitcoin account before sending crypto to Ledger Live?

Yes. Open Ledger Live, connect and unlock the device, install the Bitcoin app through My Ledger, then choose Add account and follow the prompts. Then use Receive to get an address and check that address on the device screen before you send funds. You do not need an email login or a sign-up for this.

Can I use the same Ledger device with Ledger Live on my laptop and phone?

Yes. One Ledger device can work with Ledger Live on a laptop and on a phone. Install Ledger Live on each, connect the same device, and add the accounts you want. Your coins are on the blockchain, so Ledger Live is a viewer; the private keys stay on the device. On mobile you can use Bluetooth with a Nano X; on desktop, use USB. Do not enter your recovery phrase in either app.

I am new to crypto and just bought a Ledger Nano X. Should I install Ledger Live first or set up the device first?

The simplest path is to install Ledger Live from ledger.com or your app store, open it, connect your device, and follow the setup prompts. Create a PIN you can remember but others cannot guess. When the device shows your 24-word recovery phrase, write it down on paper in the exact order. Do not photograph it, type it into a computer or phone, or save it in a password manager. Confirm the phrase on the device. After that, use Ledger Live to install the coin apps you need and add accounts. To receive crypto, open the account, choose Receive, and verify that the address on your device matches the one in Ledger Live. Always create a fresh phrase on the device for a new setup. If anything looks different from these steps, stop and check the official support pages on ledger.com before moving funds.
