Ledger Wallet App: Supported Devices and What It Does Not Do
The Ledger wallet app comes in a desktop version and a mobile version, and the two are used a little differently with your Ledger device. This overview compares them, explains how each connects to the hardware wallet, lists the current device models, and covers the security points that apply to both. It is informational and is not affiliated with Ledger.
Two Versions of the Ledger Wallet App
Both versions are Ledger Live, the free companion app for Ledger hardware wallets. They show the same kind of information and rely on the same device to approve transactions.
The desktop version
The desktop version runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and connects to your device with a USB cable. It suits setting up a new device, installing coin apps, updating firmware and managing accounts at a desk.
The mobile version
The mobile version runs on iOS and Android. It lets you check your portfolio, receive and send crypto and use the same services while away from a computer. A Nano X can connect to it over Bluetooth, and newer devices can do so where Ledger supports it.
Using both together
Many owners use both versions with the same device. Each installation should come from an official source, and the device remains the only place where transactions are approved.
| Point | Desktop version | Mobile version |
|---|---|---|
| Operating systems | Windows, macOS, Linux | iOS, Android |
| Official source | ledger.com | Apple App Store, Google Play |
| Connection to the device | USB | Bluetooth with a Nano X and, where supported, newer devices |
| Typical use | Setup, firmware updates, account management | Quick checks, receiving, sending on the go |
| Local protection | Optional password lock | Optional password lock |
Which Devices Work With the App
Four models are current. An older one still works but is no longer sold.
Current models
The Nano S Plus, the Nano X, Ledger Flex and Ledger Stax are the current devices. The Nano X also supports Bluetooth. For the exact features of each model, check ledger.com.
The original Nano S
The original Nano S is discontinued. Existing devices still work, but if you are choosing a device today, pick one of the current models.
Where the 24-word phrase comes from
On any model, the recovery phrase is created on the device during setup. The app does not generate it and never asks for it. Ledger Live will never ask you to enter your 24-word recovery phrase.
What the App Does Not Do
Knowing the limits helps you spot scams that claim otherwise.
It does not store keys
Keys live on the device’s Secure Element and stay offline. Even with the app open, nothing can be signed without the device.
It has no account system
There is no cloud account, username or server password, and no 2FA, SMS or e-mail login. If a site asks you to sign in to see your Ledger wallet, it is not the real app.
It is not available on the web
Ledger Live has no browser, web or online version. There is also no separate bridge or third-party driver, and firmware is not a separate download. Firmware updates are installed through the app, in My Ledger, by following the prompts on the screen and the device.
Security Points That Apply to Both Versions
Some habits are the same no matter which version you open.
Confirm on the device
Check the address and amount on the device screen and confirm physically. If they do not match what the app shows, do not confirm.
Install from official sources
Desktop versions come from ledger.com. The Apple App Store is the source for iOS and Google Play for Android, and an Android APK should only come from ledger.com. The macOS version is not in the Mac App Store.
Keep your backup offline
The recovery phrase on paper or metal is your backup. There is no wallet backup file. Ledger Recover is an optional paid subscription, with an encrypted, fragmented backup held by independent providers after identity verification. See ledger.com for details.
Forgot the password lock?
Reinstall Ledger Live and reconnect your device. The lock only protects the app on that computer or phone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use the desktop or the mobile version?
Either works. The desktop version suits setup and updates, and the mobile version is convenient for everyday use. Many owners use both.
Can I connect my device to the desktop app by Bluetooth?
No. Desktop connects by USB. Bluetooth is only used with the mobile app.
Is the original Nano S still usable?
Existing devices still work, but the model is discontinued. Current models are listed on ledger.com.
Can the app work without the internet?
The app reads blockchain information and sends transactions, so it normally needs a connection for those tasks. Your keys stay on the device regardless.
What if the app does not see my device?
Check the cable and port, unlock the device with your PIN and reopen the app. Do not install extra drivers. Contact Ledger Support through ledger.com if the problem continues.
Does the app support staking?
Earn offers staking for some coins through providers. Rewards are not guaranteed and vary.
